Throughout this project I have learned many things that will aid me in the future, one of which was the different forms of photography like fashion, architecture, photojournalism and landscape. Learning about these forms of photography will allow me to be able to broaden my horizons and use these in future projects and also my future career, as I want to pursue fashion photography. Skills like photojournalism will allow me to look at my fashion photography at a different angle and use different styles within.
OUTCOME: The final product that I produced (which was the magazine cover) shows how the fashion industry as a whole labels what and how people model/wear their clothes, this shows how damaging this is for men and women all around the world. This can lead to depression and mental health issues among people. Media are using mostly slim models which places an idea in teens minds on what they should look like and how they should dress, this leads to depression and anorexia among teens this can be life threatening in many cases.
SEMIOTICS: I decided to use the different size roses to show how different roses (humans) can be and how they shouldn’t be judged and should feel comfortable in their own skin. The background that was used was a plain white background but I added the black and white tone to it to show the darkness and hollowness that can be caused by being body-conscious.
INSPIRATION: The magazine that I took inspiration from was I-D magazine as I liked the simplistic theme that they used for their design. Below is the magazine that I took inspiration from and also the magazine that I designed.
COMPARISON: The difference between my magazine cover and I-D magazine was that I-D uses much darker tones for their design but I decided that it would be a better design for the theme I was aiming for. The theme I was using was planned to make the flowers pop a lot more to show the detail.
PRACTICAL SKILLS: I also used lines on the cover to add a more geometric design, however at i-D they use simple designs with very little detail on the page, this is a design that has been used for many years and also they have the ritual of adding a closed eye. These two factors are part of their house style. Researching the magazine allowed me to learn about all the different things they use to have a well designed magazine, I was able to take the inspiration that I gained from this and make it my own with my own twist.
CONCLUSION: I believe that the things I have learned throughout this subject will allow me to have better skills and allow me to execute magazine covers in the correct way as I have learned the principles of magazine design and the different ways of using photography. I will now be able to incorporate them into my own design and photography.
I have enjoyed this subject immensely as it is exactly what I want to pursue as a career and also it has taught me many new skills that I will be able to use throughout life in all of my future endeavours.
