Reflection on September-December

Since beginning this course I have learnt and enjoyed many subjects that have taught me things that I will be able to carry through with me for a long time.

I have enjoyed most of all the most recent topic which was magazine and photography, this was due to my love and passion for photography. We were able to incorporate our own style, mine was fashion. Throughout the topic I was expected to learn about different forms of photography like photojournalism, sport and news.

The previous topic which was advertisement allowed me to be able learn many new techniques like premier pro, which is a video editing program. Learning this allowed me to be able to edit and produce a short advert which I believe was good for my first time using such techniques.

The support that I have received by teachers this term has helped immensely and has allowed me to excel in all of my work and projects that I have undertaken.

Whilst completing the last two topics I was able to figure out what I want to study in the future as my love for photography is much more prominent than my love for media. Whilst considering this I have been able to decide that i want to study photography in the next academic year, but further than that I wish to go onto university studying fashion photography.

Questionnaire answers-

Referring back to these charts it is clear to see that majority of the people who completed the questionnaire very rarely or never read magazine, this shows that digital media has become the main way of finding out information. I believe that this is because digital media is much easier to obtain and also a lot cheaper (they’re mainly free).

Risk assessment-

Reflection-

Reflecting back onto the shoot that after the risk assessment I believe that we made sure everyone and everything was safe whilst shooting.

The risk assessment that we made allowed us to be able to make sure that everything that we were doing was safe and we were able to fix things and reassure everyone involved that they were safe.

The risk assessment that we made was one of the first things that we created when thinking about our photoshoot, we created this to take with us whilst shooting, this allowed us to change anything that was needed if anything was to happen whilst shooting, it also allowed us to make sure that we had a back up plan for if anything went wrong.

Whilst in the studio we made sure that all wire was taped to the floor to prevent injury without the risk assessment we may have left it which could have led to injury and danger for everyone involved.

Another thing we made sure was that the lights may be at risk of overheating and potentially exploding so we were cautious on how long we kept the lights on for. We also made sure of keeping people involved away from the lights and most importantly making sure that they don’t touch them. This could have led to serious danger so making sure that keeping to the risk assessment was one of our main priorities.

One of our biggest risks was keeping everyone away from the ladder as it is made out of metal which can be extremely dangerous whilst making contact from a high point. If this was to happen we would have had an idea of what to do as we kept to the risk assessment.

The conclusion was that the risk assessment mad bus realise what could go wrong within the setting. We followed this at every opportunity we could to prevent all of the dangers that could happen, whilst following the risk assessment and shooting nothing went wrong and everyone was able to stay safe.

Article-

This article will be featuring many different fashion trends which will be classed as hot or not. This is simply based on my opinion and I mean to cause no offense to you and your personal fashion style.

The first fashion trend which will be featured is vintage band tees, in my personal opinion vintage band tees are starting to become over used, wardrobes all around the world have started to become filled with vintage band tees. Celebrity’s and teens are the main culprits of ruining once an amazing trend. Brands have started to catch on to this and have begun mass producing replicas of singers like Whitney Houston and rock bands like Guns and Roses and Nirvana. The profit that has been made from items of clothing that can date back from up to 30-40 years is unimaginable. Another point about this trend is how the majority of teens and celebrities have never actually supported or listened to these singers/bands, they are simply wearing it for the ‘clout’.

The second fashion trend is Supreme, this brand was created in 1994 in New York City by James Jebbia. Ever since this brand has exploded in popularity but not all of the things this brand has done I can agree with as they regularly take advantage young teens/adults, they do this by releasing very limited items of clothing and accessories per drop which leads to resellers charging extortionate prices, an example of this is their very popular box logos which in some cases can reach prices up to the thousands. On the other hand, there is a good side of this, it teaches young kids business skills and gives them the opportunity to make money and not having to live off of their parents or loved ones. One student I talked to called Ryan said, “I wouldn’t say I buy it for the hype, I buy it because I like what Supreme produce”. I can say I agree with this statement because some of the things they produce actually bring up subjects that tackle issues that’s facing the world today. An example of this would the infamous “F*** the president” tee this was created when Donald Trump was first elected as president, Supreme did this as an anti-president. This wasn’t the first time that Supreme produced something political, they have done this multiple time with many different items of clothing.

This part will be featuring interviews from students who are interested in fashion and will be asking what’s the average they spend on fashion per month and what brands they are interested the most in. The first student is called Louis, after asking the questions he told me  “the most I’ve spent on fashion in a month would £500” this statement shocked me a bit as I was wondering where they are able to get this money from, He also said “lately the brands I have been most interested in the most would be Burberry and Palace”.

I can only assume that most youth are mostly influenced by celebrity’s and their piers around them. Celebrity’s like the Kardashian play a huge roll in this, as soon as they mention a product or brand fans are instantly beginning to wear these items. This can be extremely damaging for teenagers as they are constantly trying to fit in and be like their idols, most can’t afford these items or they feel as though they aren’t the right shape/size to use them so they become bullied or depressed which can become extremely dangerous.

Final evaluation-

Throughout this project I have learned many things that will aid me in the future, one of which was the different forms of photography like fashion, architecture, photojournalism and landscape. Learning about these forms of photography will allow me to be able to broaden my horizons and use these in future projects and also my future career, as I want to pursue fashion photography. Skills like photojournalism will allow me to look at my fashion photography at a different angle and use different styles within.

OUTCOME: The final product that I produced (which was the magazine cover) shows how the fashion industry as a whole labels what and how people model/wear their clothes, this shows how damaging this is for men and women all around the world. This can lead to depression and mental health issues among people. Media are using mostly slim models which places an idea in teens minds on what they should look like and how they should dress, this leads to depression and anorexia among teens this can be life threatening in many cases.

SEMIOTICS: I decided to use the different size roses to show how different roses (humans) can be and how they shouldn’t be judged and should feel comfortable in their own skin. The background that was used was a plain white background but I added the black and white tone to it to show the darkness and hollowness that can be caused by being body-conscious.

INSPIRATION: The magazine that I took inspiration from was I-D magazine as I liked the simplistic theme that they used for their design. Below is the magazine that I took inspiration from and also the magazine that I designed.

COMPARISON: The difference between my magazine cover and I-D magazine was that I-D uses much darker tones for their design but I decided that it would be a better design for the theme I was aiming for. The theme I was using was planned to make the flowers pop a lot more to show the detail.

PRACTICAL SKILLS: I also used lines on the cover to add a more geometric design, however at i-D they use simple designs with very little detail on the page, this is a design that has been used for many years and also they have the ritual of adding a closed eye. These two factors are part of their house style. Researching the magazine allowed me to learn about all the different things they use to have a well designed magazine, I was able to take the inspiration that I gained from this and make it my own with my own twist.

CONCLUSION: I believe that the things I have learned throughout this subject will allow me to have better skills and allow me to execute magazine covers in the correct way as I have learned the principles of magazine design and the different ways of using photography. I will now be able to incorporate them into my own design and photography.

I have enjoyed this subject immensely as it is exactly what I want to pursue as a career and also it has taught me many new skills that I will be able to use throughout life in all of my future endeavours.

Post production, photoshop-

I have finished the photography for my magazine cover, so now I need to edit the image and commence the graphic design in photoshop.

The following steps are the ones I took to create my magazine cover-

Step 1- Import image to photoshop from desktop; the canvas of photoshop was set up as a4 size in RGB mode, which means it will be displayed on screens mainly (computer, phones, tablets, etc.) After inserting image do not forget to tick the tick on top.

Step 2- we had to rasterise the image, because it was identified by photoshop as a ‘smart object’. You’d transform the image by right clicking on the ‘smart object’ layer, and from the menu choose ‘rasterise’.

To get rid of the gaps of the sides I had to ‘transform’ the image by scaling up (make it bigger). To do so I had to link the width and height by activating (click on) the link tool which looks like the links of  a chain; you do this after activating the ‘transform’ tool (command or control+t).

Step 3- I then decided to use the text tool to create the title, the font that was used was SignPainter. this was used to fit the retro theme that I was aiming for into magazine cover.

Step 4- In this part I was creating the box that will go around the title for the I used the rectangular marquee tool to create the lines that will be used. Then I used the lasso tool to draw around the parts of the body that the lines will cross over to add the effect that it is going behind the body.

Step 5- In this part I exported the image as a jpeg using the RGB settings.

Evaluation for Magazine cover-

Throughout the design process for my magazine cover there was a few things that I believe I could have improved on, one of which was my skills whilst using photoshop. On the other hand the skills I was able to learn during the process of design, will allow me to be able to use these skills for future projects that will include photography and graphic design.

The photography that was used for the magazine cover could have been improved I believe that I could have added something a bit more interesting in the background like a different colour like red to fit the theme of the roses. This could have allowed me to have different covers with different styles.

The first magazine cover that I tested with was not very good as I didn’t use the rule of thirds and it also didn’t contain anything that was eye-catching, where as the final magazine cover is a bit more geometric and includes lines that adds a more eye-cathing affect to the cover.

Below, in order are the magazines that I created, the last one is going to be the final poster that will be submitted-
